Dining rooms are no longer an obsolete section of the house, collecting dust as the entire family eats dinner before the television. Throughout the centuries, we have evolved from a formal dining room to a relaxed and comfortable eating space. They have become more of entertainment and hangout spots, personalized and modern as per the inhabitants’ individual and aesthetic styles. With the new decade starting on a happy note, we have a list of oven-fresh trends that can instantly take your unused dining room from drab and colorless, to fun and fantastic! So, how are you upgrading your dining space?

A laid-back atmosphere

When we look at formal dining rooms in movies, we see images of large and chunky dining tables, ornate chairs and heavy drapes. Unfortunately, such furnishings do not serve their purpose. Instead, generate cheerful vibes with an open, simple and modern layout with child-friendly furniture. You can use paneled walls to highlight the furnishings and light fixtures.

Bold and colorful

An all-white kitchen and dining room combination have become things of the past. Go for any interior design magazine subscription, you would always find lots of colors. Experiment with different shapes and colors, and see what makes your place look exciting but not overdone.

Mix-and-match

Speaking of exciting, some people just get bored with conventional items. For example, you can play around with traditional and modern elements to achieve a vintage yet comfortable feel in your space. Mix different patterns, colors, and styles (think cane furniture with an heirloom grandfather’s clock?) and create an eclectic ensemble.

Green plants

If you’re biophilic, chances are that you already have plants all around the house. Give your dining room a fresh boost of life with glass bottle vases, a layered table of plants and fresh herbs on the dining table. If you have space, you can go for a fancy green wall as well.

Personalized space

Dining rooms are no longer places where people just eat their breakfast, read the newspaper and leave for work. You can incorporate your hobbies into your dining area as well, with self-painted artwork and cabinetry, bookshelf or heirloom collection.

Upholstered chairs

Luxury, style, and comfort can go on the same page, and we’re talking about upholstered chairs. Depending on the chosen color and pattern, they can set the mood for the entire space: playful, formal or colorful.

Benches and barstools

If you’re looking for a seating arrangement that accommodates more people, go for benches. They don’t just make for great space savers but give a ‘garden’ feel to the dining area. Barstools are a great option to add that warm and cohesive upgrade to the stereotypical notion of an eating area.

Round tables

As opposed to the regular rectangular tables, round tables are smaller and intimate. Guests can look at everyone at the same time due to the curved surface, and many chairs can be added to fit in more people. They are extremely good for open spaces due to their sleek and warm structures.

Retro-inspired designs

Though we keep talking about modern designs, retro will always be in fashion. If you don’t want to give a complete makeover to your dining room, start with simple and fresh pieces such as acrylic tables and hairpin legs.

Lighting fixtures

Moving over regular lights and lampshades, state-of-the-art lighting elements in experimental shapes and asymmetrical designs are expected. Thin-wicker pieces, chandeliers and pendant lights are highly popular examples.
